"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of
people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move." Then last
year, Douglas Adams, left this mortal plane of existence, and that was
decidedly another bad move.
We've been almost a year without the creative genius that created
paranoid androids, doors that worked hard to please their users and,
quite possibly, the most horrific way for a bowl of petunias to meet
their tragic end. Douglas Adams left a legacy that has influenced
computer science, Geek slang and created an entire writing style that
is reverently imitated by others. Now he's gone, but he won't be
forgotten.
Last year I wrote a short column, grieving over the world's loss, and
recommending that, as a wake, everyone should carry a towel fourteen
days after his death. The name 'Towel Day' stuck and the response was
amazing. On May 25, 2001, hoopy froods from all over the planet showed
that they knew where their towel was. Check out all the pictures we
were sent at towelday.org.
So that we never forget, May 25, 2002 will be the second annual Towel
Day. Here's your chance to prove what a hoopy frood you really are.
Towelday.org and System Toolbox are offering to publish your essays.
Tell us why you'll be remembering Douglas Adams on May 25 and we'll
publish all the ones we like.
So stay tuned and `...and the Universe...will explode later for your
pleasure'.
